Using tool of NDL digital archive for lecture of history of astronomy

Harufumi Tamazawa – Kyoto City University of Arts/Kyoto University

The National Diet Library (NDL) in Japan collects a variety of materials (documents, books, and so on) in Japan, and books whose copyrights have expired are gradually being made available online by the digital archive of NDL . NDL has also provided parsing tools in the last few years, making it a very usable archive. The materials from about 150 years ago, when knowledge of modern science was imported to Japan at once and Japanese translations of scientific terms were developed, show how knowledge of modern astronomy was received and how perceptions changed at that time.It is useful not only for research but also for education to actually see the materials of that time (albeit digital)and consider what the demand for knowledge was. In a lecture on the history of astronomy as part of general education at university, we tried to have students actually use the tools provided by NDL to search for materials. By actually searching, seeing and reading the materials of the time, it helped the students to think about how they were trying to understand the cutting-edge knowledge at the time when there was no fixed translation yet.
